Horse D'Oeuvres? Hey irisgirl12000, remember telling me that a tim tam is a cookie in Australia? Well, it was also the name of a horse. It turns out that a whole neighborhood in the town where I work has all its streets named after winners of the Kentucky Derby. Tim Tam won in 1958. It is pure coincidence that I learned this on the day of the 2008 Kentucky Derby.

That's awesome! I probably would have lived/worked there for years under the mistaken idea that the street was named after the cookie and stil been amused by it. :)
Off to wikipedia. Must know: was the horse first, or the cookie?
The only past Derby winner I know off the top of my head is Sonny's Halo....I know this because I remember watching the Derby with my parents as a violent weather system moved into our area. We watched the race and then later we had to go down in the basement because there was a tornado warning. I was 5. Good times. :P
Well, you just confirmed your age. Sonny's Halo won in 1983.
I should have mentioned that the reason I found this out is that a crossword puzzle asked for the jockey of Whirlaway. Once I looked up Triple Crown winners, enough of the streets were in there that I had to look at the winners of the individual races. Since I keep track of other sport championships (for crossword purposes) I just went ahead and put these in a spreadsheet too.
Well, you just confirmed your age.
It's not like it was any big secret, or like there's a prize for figuring it out. Relax, Math Boy.
Crossword puzzles....meh. I try to like them but I don't. Maybe once I'm 32 or 33 I'll appreciate them more. ;)
Crossword puzzles are probably my least favorite, other than mathematical puzzles that are too straightforward. There has to be some logic to keep them from being just thinly disguised math problems. I like crosswords with some sort of twist, like cryptic crosswords and those that make you figure out that some of the squares hold several letters. That sort of thing. |
